The Best Value Compact Phone in 2026
If you’re searching for a compact, powerful, and affordable smartphone in Australia, it’s hard to go past the Apple iPhone 12 Mini. While newer models continue to get bigger (and more expensive), the iPhone 12 Mini has quietly become one of the best-value small smartphones on the market—especially when you can pick one up for under $300 refurbished. Here’s why this pocket-sized powerhouse still dominates the small phone category in 2026.
A Truly Compact Design
The biggest reason people love the iPhone 12 Mini is simple: size. With a 5.4-inch display, it’s one of the last genuinely small smartphones ever made, designed for true one-handed use. It fits easily in your pocket, doesn’t weigh you down, and feels refreshing in a market full of oversized devices. Brands have largely abandoned compact flagships, which makes the 12 Mini even more unique today, and if you want a small phone that still feels premium, there are very few real alternatives.
Performance That Still Holds Up
Despite being released in 2020, the iPhone 12 Mini is powered by the Apple A14 Bionic chip, a chip that still performs exceptionally well today. In real-world use, it delivers smooth app performance, fast multitasking, and reliable speed whether you’re browsing, streaming, messaging, or even playing games. Compared to most Android phones under $300, which often feel sluggish after a short period of use, the 12 Mini still feels fast and responsive.
Premium OLED Display
One of the standout features is its Super Retina XDR display, offering deep blacks, vibrant colours, and excellent brightness in a compact form. Most phones in this price range use lower-quality LCD panels, so getting a premium OLED display at this price point is a major advantage.
5G Connectivity Included
The iPhone 12 Mini also supports 5G connectivity, which keeps it relevant in Australia as networks continue to improve. This means faster download speeds and better overall performance on supported networks, without sacrificing other key features like build quality or performance.
Camera Quality That Delivers
The camera system is another area where the 12 Mini continues to shine, featuring a reliable 12MP wide lens and an ultra-wide camera, along with strong HDR performance and Night Mode for low-light shots. For everyday use, social media, and casual photography, it consistently produces high-quality results, outperforming many newer budget smartphones where the camera often feels like a compromise.
Long-Term Software Support
Another key reason the iPhone 12 Mini remains such a strong choice is software support, with ongoing updates from Apple Inc. ensuring security, performance improvements, and access to the latest iOS features. This long-term support gives it a clear advantage over many cheaper Android devices that quickly fall behind in updates.
Premium Build Quality
Even today, the build quality still feels premium, with an aluminium frame and Ceramic Shield glass giving it durability and a flagship feel that cheaper plastic devices simply can’t match.
Why Refurbished Makes Sense
When you combine all of this with the value of buying refurbished, the iPhone 12 Mini becomes even more compelling, offering flagship-level features at a fraction of the original price while still being fully tested and backed by warranty for peace of mind.
Who Should Buy It?
For users who want a small, lightweight phone without sacrificing performance, or for those upgrading from older iPhones like the iPhone 8 or SE, it remains one of the best-value options available. While it may not suit users who want a large display or maximum battery life, for the right buyer it delivers an unmatched combination of size, performance, and value.
Final Verdict
In a market filled with oversized and often overpriced smartphones, the iPhone 12 Mini continues to stand out, and if you’re looking for the best small smartphone under $300 in Australia, it’s still the clear winner.
